Orangutan Stands Up To Logging Crew In An Inspiring Show Of Resistance
Deforestation has devastated populations of Orangutans in Indonesia. The Bornean Orangutan is now one of the most endangered animals on earth.
Something needs to be done, and soon, if these incredible animals are to survive even the next decade. Humans need to take a stand, but one orangutan already is.
Video of the incident in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, shows the orangutan running toward an oncoming bulldozer, brazen in its resistance to the deforestation. Nearby, workers shake canes at the animal as it climbs onto the machine.
According to NowThis, the Indonesian government once promised to protect the remaining orangutans from commercial exploitation, but the signs of illegal logging operations are still being found.
“Habitat destruction forces orangutans to enter neighboring plantations and farms looking for food,” Karmele Llana Sanchez, Program Director of International Animal Rescue told NowThis. “This frequently leads to conflict with humans. Sungai Putri is home to one of the largest populations in the world and we are at a critical point for the Bornean orangutan. Without forests like this they can’t survive.”
The brave orangutan in the video was eventually saved by International Animal Rescue. Watch the full video below.
