These Antlered Creatures Sound Like They Belong in The Lord of the Rings!

Remember the Ringwraiths in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings movies? These elks sound just like them! The fascinating and slightly terrifying sound is actually the combination of two sounds: a low rumble and a high whistle. The call usually ends in a series of grunts, notes National Park Trips’ Yellowstone National Park website.

These sounds are known as bugles. For the longest time, these sounds coming from the elk has stumped scientists. The elks’ voice box is designed to create a much lower sound but their screeches are off so incredibly high, it leaves researchers baffled. Not until recently, scientists determined that the elk is capable of producing a number of sounds at the same time! How cool is that?!
