Beluga Whales Party in Canada!goodhub
Every year the world’s largest pool party takes place near Canada’s Somerset Island, as thousands of beluga whales converge to bask in the warm waters of the Cunningham Inlet. Veteran National Geographic photographer and explorer Nansen Weber has been coming to this party for the past 16 years. Weber is photographing these whales using drones and other techniques for a photo ID project that will help conservation scientists keep track of the whales.
As global warming thins the Arctic ice, the Northwest Passage is opening up and more ships are passing through waters that were previously inaccessible. Weber hopes his work will help to bring more attention to the effect of shipping on the beluga whales’ migratory patterns, and to the importance of protecting safe havens like Cunningham.
Watch as these beautiful belugas gather together and party like no other whales!
