Caron Steele, the winner of the Bird Photographer Of The Year 2019, took a breathtaking photo of a Dalmatian Pelican on a frozen Lake Kerkini in Greece.

She was determined to get the shot of a lifetime and waited for the weather to turn around: “Fortunately, a few holes started to thaw in the lake and the birds slowly began to return,” Steele said.

She went on to not only with the top prize of £5,000 and the title “Bird Photographer of the Year 2019,” but also the Gold Award for the Best Portrait category and the People’s Choice Award with the photo “Dancing On Ice – Dalmatian Pelican.”

The image was an instant favorite with the judges, “Lake Kerkini’s Dalmatian Pelicans are a popular subject in the competition, and the judges see hundreds of pictures of them. The fact that this image had such an immediate and lasting impact on the panel is a testament to the skill of the photographer. What makes it special is that the frozen lake presented an almost unique opportunity for Caron to capture a picture with a different perspective. So often these opportunities are wasted – delightfully not on this occasion. Congratulations Caron, this is a photographic masterpiece.”
